Attract Winter Waterfowl

Waterfowl are some of the most beautiful and cherished wildlife species in North America. Both Goose and duck populations have seen recent increases due to the efforts of many organizations including environmentalists and hunters through habitat improvement to our waterways.  Unfortunately, as most of us realize, North America has less and less bodies of water and marshes open to support the waterfowl we all enjoy.  In  addition to having a need for water for both nesting purposes and feeding, waterfowl need a place to rest that is secure from predators during their long migrations through the fall and early winter. Due to the need for water, many rivers and moving bodies of water that have stayed ice free in the past are being dammed or diverted in to holding ponds or lakes.  These storage ponds and lakes have a tendency to freeze early and stay frozen late causing waterfowl to search out open water to inhabit. With lake bed aeration you can keep an area of your pond or lake free of ice for hunting, waterfowl viewing, or just as a way to provide habitat for all types of duck and geese species.

Lake bed aeration introduces oxygen into your pond or lakes water column and also acts as a “lift” causing the warmer water on the bottom to circulate to the surface. This circulation of the water is what keeps ice from forming on the surface of the water and provides an opportunity to enjoy the waterfowl that visit your pond to roost during the late fall and early winter migrations.

Extend Waterfowl Hunting

Duck_Mallard

Duck and Goose hunting are long standing traditions in many parts of North America, enjoyed by millions annually. The inability to find a lot of good habitat on public land has forced many waterfowl hunters to purchase or lease hunting properties that are only productive for part of the hunting season.  The ponds and lakes that held good numbers of birds in the early season  freeze and while the waterfowl may still be in the area they are no longer visiting frozen waters.

Lake bed aeration provides opportunity for both duck and goose hunters to extend their seasons. Traditional duck hunting typically takes place over water using decoys to lure the ducks into gun range. With a large hole opened in the ice by aeration, ducks will not only be pouring into the decoys, but will be landing in a specific area dictated by the placement of the aeration equipment. Although geese are often hunted in the same fashion, geese are often hunted in the hay or grain fields that they feed in.  These flocks of geese will roost on nearby ponds and lakes in between feeding. By keeping open water available for them to rest on, geese will not only congregate to your area , but stay longer as well. Lake bed aeration will increase the harvest, extend the season, and give more opportunity to enjoy waterfowl hunting.

Enhance Viewing

duck_pond_kids

Many people enjoy living or working near ponds and lakes that provide the ability to enjoy viewing waterfowl and other species. Aeration of the water to de-ice the surface is a great way to keep waterfowl in the area for year round enjoyment. The birds themselves benefit from increased safety from predators by providing a good place to rest and recover from the effects of harsh winters. In addition to de-icing, aeration also will help accelerate the breakdown of the waste that waterfowl produce all year. Providing a greater viewing opportunity and higher quality water to any pond or lake.
